Individual Voice Therapy

Your first session will typically be an hour long with the aim of giving you the chance to discuss your voice concerns in depth, according to your personality, vocal problems and patterns and the way you live your life.

During this initial session, I will:

  • Assess your voice quality, vocal and breathing patterns and posture
  • Listen to your story-the sound of your voice tells part of the story-your overall physical and mental health, lifestyle, habits, social and professional life are also relevant
  • Provide information on how your voice is produced to help you understand why voice problems occur and discuss your individual diagnosis in detail
  • Advise you how to best care for your throat and vocal cords
  • Suggest realistic changes to your working or private life to ease the load on your voice
  • Test your voice to see what it can do and guide therapy decisions
  • Begin a fully customised programme of voice therapy techniques designed to rehabilitate your voice and protect it from future damage

“I can’t explain the amazing difference. I was so tense, worried and tired all the time but now I understand what is wrong. Everything was explained with such enthusiasm and kindness” – LS

Follow on voice therapy sessions are usually shorter. Therapy will be holistic and address every aspect that can influence the way you use your voice:

  • Posture
  • Breath support and breathing patterns
  • Vocal stamina
  • Muscular control and release of unhelpful tension
  • Resonance
  • Pitch and volume range and control
  • Projection techniques
  • Environmental factors
  • Lifestyle
  • Co-existing health conditions
  • Personal and vocational issues
  • Social and psychological influences

We will work together to set realistic goals, and your progress will be monitored at each session.

Regular, consistent practise of techniques and employment of advice in between sessions is essential for treatment to be effective.

“Further sessions with Karen helped restore my confidence and one particular session resulted in me walking into her room without a voice and walking out talking. She also gave me the means to ‘restore’ my voice if it did go again” – PC
